The keyfinder plugin uses the KeyFinder program to detect themusical key of track from its audio data and store it in theinitial_key field of your database. It does soautomatically when importing music or through the beetkeyfinder[QUERY]
command.

Another option, which is more straightforward and offers instant results, is to use a key detection VST or plugin in your DAW. Configuration¶

To configure the plugin, make a keyfinder:
section in yourconfiguration file. The available options are:
- auto: Analyze every file onimport. Otherwise, you need to use the
beetkeyfinder
commandexplicitly.Default:yes
- bin: The name of the KeyFinder program on your system ora path to the binary. If you installed the KeyFinder GUI on a Mac, forexample, you want something like
/Applications/KeyFinder.app/Contents/MacOS/KeyFinder
.Default:KeyFinder
(i.e., search for the program in your$PATH
).. - overwrite: Calculate a key even for files that already have aninitial_key value.Default:
no
.
To identify the key of a song by it's chords choose the chords below and see the highlighted slices on the circle of fifths to the right. This searches all 12 possible keys for the selected chords (diatonically) and returns the keys with most matches. If there is more than one key that contains the selected chords it will display all relevant keys.
Clicking any key in the circle of fifths will display all diatonic chords within that key as guitar chords for you string ticklers.
